SUMMER 2011

The South West Group’s Working Test was held at Durley, Hampshire on Sunday 10th April 2011 by the kind permission of the Landowner and the Gamekeeper. This was a popular day, and the dogs especially enjoyed the water as we were experiencing the hottest April for some years.  We would like to thank the judges, committee members, stewards, dummy throwers and helpers on the day for making the event such a successful one. The SWG also appreciated the donations of raffle prizes, which in turn raised £154 for The GSP Rescue.  Contributions of cakes always enjoyed.

Gary Squires tended his resignation with immediate effect after seeing through the working test.   Gary and his wife Carol (a committee member, now resigned) were presented with two engraved glasses in appreciation of their hard work for the SWG.

I am delighted to inform you that Bob Sparks (a former Chairman) has stepped up to the role, with a unanimous vote of confidence. The committee now comprises of myself (Fleur Fillingham) as Secretary, Julie Jones as Treasurer with Tracey Downton Black and Kenny Jone as committee members.  The committee  continue to meet on a regular basis.  Please do contact the Secretary on gspswsec@hotmail if there is anything you would like to be brought forward for discussion at a meeting.  We also welcome new members and any visiting HPR owners visiting the South West to come and train with us.

Sunday July 3rd will see us at Downton for our water  training day.  Directions will be emailed to the contact list.  Please contact gspswsec@hotmail.com if you require further information.
Sunday August 7th training will be at Sherford, Dorset with a fun test day.  This is followed by our annual mouth watering BBQ & Social.

Training; Last month we trailed out a different style of training.  This comprised of experienced trainers being located in one spot with the aim of instructing one particular element. For example a memory retrieve, dependant on the standard of dog and handler the test was adjusted accordingly and help given.  This also enabled puppy handlers and inexperienced dogs and handlers to see at close range a graduate/open dog perform the task.  There was less standing about and more interactive involvement with handlers moving between the trainers when the need arose.

We look forward to seeing you at the next GSP South West Group training session.
